TaxEngine - Basic Instructions for Preparing and Filing Tennesee Tax Returns
In preparing the state tax return, most information will carry from the federal return. The income and withholding will carry to the state from entries on the W-2. Be sure the state information has been entered on the W-2 input screen. Other income items will carry from the federal input according to the state designated.
Filing Status
Individuals required to file Tennessee state income taxes includes the following:
- Legal Tennesse residents whose taxable interest and dividend income exceeded $1,250 ($2,500 if married, filing jointly) during the tax year.
- Individuals moving in or out of Tennessee during the year and whose taxable interest and dividend income during this period exceeded $1,250 ($2,500 if married, filing jointly).
- Individuals residing in another state, but who maintained a residence in Tennessee for more than six months of the year and whose taxable interest and dividend income exceeded $1,250 ($2,500 if married, filing jointly).
- An individual, bank, etc. acting as a Tennessee fiduciary (administrator, executor, guardian, trustee, or other acting in a similar capacity) who received $1,250 or more in taxable interest and dividend income for the benefit of Tennessee residents.
- A Tennessee partnership whose taxable interest and dividend income exceeded $1,250.
As the Tennessee income tax does not apply to salaries and wages, items of income such as Social Security and pension income are not subject to state tax.
